Well Dweller Review: A Charming, Creepy-Cute Fairytale Adventure (90/100)

Well Dweller's atmospheric Midnight Drench area reveal with Glimmer holding a glowing matchstick

Game details: Developed by Kyle Thompson; published by Kyle Thompson, Top Hat Studios and Doyoyo Games; released on Steam for Windows on 22 September 2026. Official Steam listing.

AT A GLANCE: A striking dark-fairytale Metroidvania with memorable creature designs, atmospheric music and rewarding exploration. Difficult bosses and awkward enemy placement occasionally take the shine off an otherwise compelling adventure.

There’s something wonderfully strange about Well Dweller. This unique little Metroidvania blends adorable character designs with a dark fairytale atmosphere, creating a world that feels both charming and unsettling in equal measure. Packed with peculiar characters, secrets to uncover, and plenty of exploration, it’s an adventure that draws you in with its cute exterior while revealing a much darker side beneath the surface.

You play as Glimmer, a little bird armed with a trusty matchstick, who must venture through a variety of environments filled with dangerous enemies, curious characters, and hidden secrets. Along the way, you’ll battle foes, collect trinkets, find trapped souls, unlock new abilities, and solve little puzzles to help you progress. Exploration is a big part of the experience, with plenty to discover as you venture further into this strange fairytale world.

A Dark Fairytale Full of Character

One of Well Dweller’s biggest strengths is its distinctive atmosphere. The creepy-but-cute character designs give the game a personality of its own, striking a wonderful balance between adorable and macabre. There’s something particularly appealing about its dark fairytale aesthetic, which makes the world feel both inviting and slightly unsettling.

One moment that really stood out to me was discovering a message left for Glimmer in the mailbox by the hunter. Accompanied by a picture of him holding Glimmer’s family, the message simply reads, “you’re next”. It’s a wonderfully chilling moment that captures the darker side of Well Dweller and demonstrates how effectively the game can unsettle you without losing its distinctive fairytale charm. It’s these little touches that help make the world feel memorable and give its darker elements room to shine.

The soundtrack also plays an important role in establishing the atmosphere. At times, the music helps build an eerie, creepy feeling as you explore, while other areas feature much more melodic and peaceful tunes. This contrast works nicely with the game’s overall aesthetic, offering moments of calm alongside its more unsettling encounters.

Exploration, Combat and Challenges

As a Metroidvania, Well Dweller offers plenty of reasons to explore its world. Collecting trinkets, rescuing trapped souls, discovering secrets, and unlocking new abilities all contribute to a satisfying sense of progression. New abilities open up further opportunities for exploration, encouraging you to push onwards and discover what lies beyond previously inaccessible areas.

However, don’t let the game’s charming appearance fool you into thinking this will be an easy ride. Well Dweller can be surprisingly challenging, particularly during boss encounters and in some of its trickier areas. While overcoming these obstacles can be satisfying, the difficulty occasionally crosses into frustration.

The game’s darker encounters occasionally put its demanding combat centre stage. Original gameplay capture: Coloured Static Press.

Boss fights can be tough, and enemy placement can sometimes feel awkward, especially when you’re in the middle of a jump and find yourself heading straight into an enemy’s path. These encounters can interrupt the flow of combat and make certain sections more frustrating than they need to be. Although the challenge can make progression feel rewarding, there are moments when the gameplay tests your patience a little more than you’d like.

Thankfully, there’s plenty of incentive to keep going. The promise of new abilities, hidden secrets, and more of the game’s wonderfully strange world makes it easy to find yourself pushing forward, even after a particularly troublesome encounter.

Verdict

Well Dweller is a charming little Metroidvania with a distinctive identity and a wonderfully weird fairytale world. Its creepy-but-cute character designs, atmospheric soundtrack, enjoyable exploration, and memorable darker moments make it a delightful adventure for fans of the genre.

It’s not without its frustrations. Some boss fights can be challenging, and awkward enemy placement occasionally makes combat feel unfair. However, these issues don’t overshadow the experience as a whole. There’s plenty to love about exploring this unusual world, discovering its secrets, and seeing how its cute exterior contrasts with its darker side.

With its memorable atmosphere and satisfying sense of discovery, Well Dweller is an adventure that left a lasting impression on me. It may test your patience now and then, but its charm, creativity, and dark fairytale personality make it well worth your time.

Final Score: 90/100
