Playable Archive, a new short-form psychological horror experience from DarkStone Digital, is available free on Steam after a surprise Halloween release on 26 October 2026. Its creator, Brian Clarke, is best known for The Mortuary Assistant; publisher DreadXP helped bring this smaller project to players.
Rather than announcing a full new horror epic, Clarke has released a self-contained glimpse of a project that was previously cancelled. For players, it is a free standalone experience. For its creator, it also represents a chance to give years of work a public home instead of leaving it unseen.
What is Playable Archive?
The first-person horror story takes the form of a mysterious archive of unsettling evidence. A couple renovating a house discovers material tied to disturbing events, with clues leading towards ritual activity, apparent communication with the dead and multiple timelines.
The developers describe it as a 30–60 minute experience built for one sitting. There is no save system, so make time to play it through rather than expecting to return to a checkpoint. The Steam listing also warns of strong language, violence, murder and occult themes.
The cancelled project behind it
In an official message shared through Steam, Clarke explained that the larger game he had spent years developing had been cancelled. DreadXP later approached him about releasing some of that work; after adjustments and polishing, it became Playable Archive. The short release is not a commitment that the cancelled full-length title will return.
This gives the announcement a human dimension beyond a typical free-game promotion. Unfinished work does not always get an audience, and Clarke’s decision offers a rare look at a concept that otherwise might have remained in a developer’s archive.
Where can you play it?
Playable Archive is free to play now on Steam for Windows PC. DreadXP also has an official game information page with a trailer and screenshots.
It is an especially timely discovery for anyone looking for something short and unsettling during Halloween week. We have not played or reviewed it yet, so this is a news introduction rather than a verdict.
