There is something suspicious about a ghost that insists on being happy. In Super Happy Ghost Maze, the smile comes with a pursuit: find your way around a dark facility, restore the power and escape before its restless residents find you. Developer Starboard Bow Games has expanded its playable horror maze for Halloween, adding two new hunters and an even tougher challenge for returning players.
This is a First Signal discovery based on the developer’s submission, confirmed update notes and supplied game screenshots. It is not a hands-on review, and no score is attached.

Seven ghosts, one decidedly unpleasant maze
The premise is simple enough to explain but less comfortable to experience. The player wakes in a maze-like facility occupied by ghosts that patrol, pursue and react to the attempt to restore power. Each terminal activated increases the pressure. Navigation and listening to distinct audio cues matter, while the game’s quick restarts are designed to send you straight back into the maze after a failed escape.
The 23 October Halloween update introduced The Listener, a hunter that responds to sound, and Ambush, a threat built around lurking where players may least expect it. Developer Bill confirmed to us that both the browser and downloadable versions now feature all seven ghosts, even though an older section of the itch.io description still refers to five.

What differs between browser and download?
The free browser edition lets curious players try the experience without purchasing the downloadable build. Bill clarified that the web version contains the seven-ghost update but leaves out microphone settings and some achievements. Those omissions matter particularly for The Listener: its voice-detection mechanic requires the compatible downloadable setup, so browser players should not assume the same microphone interaction.
The update also introduced a tougher Hardened Spirits mode for players ready to return to the maze. The developer’s submission mentions seven terminals and 27 achievements in the Halloween build; individual platform availability and achievement support may differ.

Behind the signal
Super Happy Ghost Maze comes from Starboard Bow Games, the project of William S. Coolman. The developer confirmed that its submitted screenshots are cleared for editorial use, and separately confirmed rights or CC0 licensing for the game’s music and sound effects. That does not turn this discovery into an endorsement or a gameplay verdict, but it gives readers a clearer picture of the people and materials behind the submission.
Although the Halloween update is available, the official itch.io game page continues to label the overall project in development. We are therefore keeping it in First Signal rather than treating it as a finished, fully released title for The Switchboard.
For players who enjoy short, stealth-focused horror experiences, the draw is the tension of a familiar corridor becoming less safe with every step. You can play the browser demo and explore download options on itch.io or read the developer’s official Halloween update notes.
