The Painting Desk

From bare sprue to finished centrepiece. A new series exploring the art, craft and culture of painting gaming miniatures, with original photography, practical techniques and thoughtful product reviews.

The work behind the paint

The Painting Desk draws on years of hands-on miniature painting, including display-scale character models, layered metallic armour, dramatic weapon effects and detailed scenic bases. Our portfolio features original physical miniatures, painted by hand.

Paints and techniques

These are examples of some of my earlier Warhammer 40K work, painted using a combination of The Army Painter and Citadel products. Across these models, I’ve used a mix of techniques including layered metallics, highlighting, weapon glow effects, weathering and detailed scenic basing. I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with different paints and methods to bring out the personality of each miniature and give every finished piece its own distinct character.

What we’re creating

  • From unpainted miniature to finished model: step-by-step painting coverage.
  • Close-up photography and detailed paintwork breakdowns.
  • Honest hands-on assessments of miniatures, paints, brushes, tools and scenery.
  • Interviews with sculptors, designers and independent printable-miniature creators.
  • Board-game and collectible tie-ins, including a proposed Mass Effect tabletop series.

For miniature creators and hobby brands

We welcome sample and loan enquiries from miniature manufacturers, tabletop publishers, retailers, sculptors, 3D-print creators and painting-equipment brands. Physical products are preferred for hands-on features. Review copies, paid activity and affiliate relationships are disclosed, and editorial verdicts remain independent.

FROM THE PAINTING DESK

Why I still love painting miniatures

For me, miniature painting has always been about much more than putting colour on a model. It’s the pleasure of taking something unfinished and gradually bringing it to life, one careful detail at a time.

There’s something wonderfully absorbing about choosing a colour scheme, working out how the light should catch a piece of armour, and adding those tiny finishing touches that most people might never notice. You lose yourself in the process.

But my favourite moment is still the last one: setting the brushes down, stepping back and seeing the finished miniature. A character that started as bare plastic or resin suddenly has personality, history and a presence of its own. That sense of satisfaction never gets old.

These are examples of some of my earlier Warhammer 40K work. I’m looking forward to picking up the brushes again and sharing that journey through The Painting Desk.
