Steam Next Fest runs from 19–26 October 2026. Our Next Fest Signal hub follows games worth investigating, with a clear distinction between announced projects and games we have actually played.
There is a certain sort of fantasy world where the landscape tells you something has gone terribly wrong before an enemy even appears. Codex Lost 2 starts with a world that has not seen the sun for thousands of years and a cathedral standing as one of the last remnants of a vanished age. Its premise is theatrical, but Freemana’s next challenge is turning that atmosphere into a place worth exploring.
A sequel with a clearer test of its systems
Developed by Freemana and published by JanduSoft, this dark-fantasy action RPG combines weapons, magic and exploration. The studio describes broad connected areas, mysterious inhabitants and a world shaped by the search for a sacred tome capable of restoring lost powers. That is the setup; what matters during play is whether curiosity is consistently rewarded.
The official demo description offers useful specifics rather than a vague promise of adventure. It includes opening regions of an interconnected labyrinth, a traditional bonfire-style checkpoint system, recoverable experience after death, a first main boss and an optional boss. Players can begin exploring melee, magic and mixed character builds.
The most interesting question is balance
The idea of blending melee and sorcery sounds appealing on paper, but games built around deliberate combat can struggle if spells make positioning irrelevant or close-range fighting becomes the obvious answer to every encounter. It will be worth looking at whether both approaches have meaningful costs and opportunities. Equally important is how the levels help players reconnect familiar landmarks and discover shortcuts.
The presence of an optional boss in the early demo is particularly promising as a design test. Optional challenges can teach players to judge danger and return later, or they can simply be unhelpful difficulty spikes. We cannot tell which applies here without playing.
What we know, and what we still need to learn
JanduSoft lists a 2027 launch window. The demo has its own Steam listing, separate from the full game. Our next step is to test the available build, record its performance and accessibility on PC, and ask Freemana about how the new game has evolved from the original Codex Lost.
