Steam Cooking Fest Is Live Until 19 October: Three Indie Food Games Worth a Look

Not every kitchen needs to be a pressure cooker. Some games make you juggle an entire restaurant while your friends panic over dirty plates. Others ask you to quietly assemble the perfect lunchbox. Steam Cooking Fest is celebrating both ends of that spectrum, and there are a few genuinely interesting indie games worth finding among the discounts.

Valve’s themed event runs from 12 to 19 October 2026, finishing at 10 am Pacific time on Monday 19 October (6 pm UK time). It brings together games built around cooking, preparing meals, running restaurants and generally putting food to work as a game mechanic. There are discounts on selected released games, while demo availability depends on the individual title.

PlateUp! | For friends who thrive under pressure

PlateUp! combines running a restaurant with roguelite progression. Players cook, serve, rearrange equipment and try to keep a business afloat as each new day changes the demands on the kitchen. You can tackle it alone, but the more tempting option is a group of friends discovering just how quickly “I thought you were washing plates” can become a crisis.

As checked on 17 October, Steam lists PlateUp! at 90% off. That makes it one of the clearest places to start if you enjoy cooperative games and are prepared for a little controlled chaos. The offer may change or expire, so check the store before purchasing.

Pack my LunchBox | For a quieter puzzle

If a frantic dinner rush sounds exhausting, Pack my LunchBox heads in the other direction. Developer Owl’s Howls asks players to read customers’ preferences and exclusions, then assemble suitable meals, snacks, sweets and drinks. The challenge comes from satisfying each order, not racing a timer.

The developer has explicitly confirmed a 45% Steam Cooking Fest discount through 19 October, and the Steam page lists a playable demo. That is a particularly sensible place for a curious player to start: try the basic loop before committing to the full version.

Make my Sandwich | A smaller, deliberate food puzzle

From the same developer, Make my Sandwich turns making a sandwich into a series of logic puzzles. You read the order, pay attention to tastes and dietary restrictions, layer the ingredients and choose a drink. It’s designed to be gentle and tactile rather than frantic.

Owl’s Howls has announced 15% off during Cooking Fest, and its Steam listing also includes a demo. Its early user reception is more mixed than Pack my LunchBox, so taking the demo route before buying is sensible.

How to get the most from Cooking Fest

The trick with any themed Steam promotion is not to treat every discounted game as a bargain automatically. Start by choosing the experience you actually want: cooperative restaurant pressure, relaxed food preparation, or a more involved management sim. Check reviews, try a demo where one is offered, and compare the discounted price with your own appetite for the game.

For CSP, the appeal here is that even a narrow theme can surface very different independent ideas. PlateUp! turns service into teamwork, while the two Owl’s Howls games turn food preparation into small, considered puzzles. There is room for both, but no one title is a guaranteed fit for everyone.
