An ordinary camping trip becomes an adventure into a bizarre, dark fairytale, where every clearing appears to conceal another riddle. Midnight Swamp has a wonderfully unsettling imagination, but it also demands patience from anyone hoping to make it through its puzzle-filled world.
In our Xbox Series X|S review, the strongest impression is of a game that knows precisely what kind of adventure it wants to be: a point-and-click mystery where observation, combining items and solving one improbable challenge after another matter far more than quick reactions. When the pieces fit together, the sense of discovery is rewarding. When they don’t, frustration can take over.
Into the dark fairytale
Playing as a tourist unexpectedly transported into a twisted world, we encounter unusual characters, hidden objects and locations that rarely explain themselves immediately. The setup is simple enough to follow, but the world soon becomes gloriously strange. It is the kind of adventure where checking every corner feels essential because almost anything might become the missing link in a later puzzle.

A swamp full of puzzles
The sheer variety of puzzles is the main attraction. Some ask us to locate missing pieces or determine a sequence; others involve gathering and combining inventory objects. Later challenges can call for careful observation, logic and even a little algebra. There is a satisfying rhythm to discovering what an apparently useless object might eventually accomplish.
That said, not every solution feels equally welcoming. We occasionally became completely stuck, and a couple of particularly stubborn sections prompted a search for outside hints. One memorable contraption combines gauges, buttons and symbols with a strict 60-second limit. Even with an instruction manual, it took five deaths to clear. Relief, rather than triumph, was the first emotion when the mechanism finally surrendered.

Charming, creepy and wonderfully odd
Where Midnight Swamp consistently succeeds is in its atmosphere. The illustrated environments and peculiar inhabitants have the visual logic of a bedtime story that has taken an unsettling wrong turn. The characters are creepy without relying on constant shocks, and the environments encourage us to linger over details that might conceal a clue.
The soundtrack understands that mood. Loud, ominous notes occasionally interrupt the quieter exploration, lending certain encounters a chill. It is not an outright terrifying game; its strengths are strangeness, curiosity and the feeling that an unexpected character or impossible little task is waiting just beyond the screen.

A mystery that does not explain everything
The story is deliberately surreal, and that fits the setting, but the conclusion left us wanting a little more clarity. An unusual narrative can be compelling without explaining every mystery, yet there is a difference between an intriguing loose end and ending an adventure wondering what actually happened.
The adventure’s other weakness is tied directly to its biggest strength: an abundance of puzzles means that the overall pace depends heavily on how much satisfaction the player takes from difficult problem-solving. Those who like methodical, clue-hunting adventures may welcome the resistance. Anyone looking for a more flowing story may feel as though they are wading through the swamp rather than exploring it.
Verdict
Midnight Swamp is an imaginative, eerie and frequently charming point-and-click adventure. Its dark fairytale artwork and sound design create a memorable atmosphere, while the puzzles cover an impressive range of ideas. Unfortunately, some sections feel more exhausting than satisfying, and the story’s surreal finale does not entirely pay off the mystery.
Coloured Static Press verdict: 72/100. A creative puzzle adventure with an intriguing world and plenty of challenges, best suited to players who enjoy taking notes, experimenting and occasionally having their patience tested.
Strengths: Distinctive dark-fairytale artwork; engaging eerie atmosphere; imaginative puzzle variety; memorable strange characters; effective soundtrack.
Considerations: Some puzzles are frustratingly difficult; uneven pacing; surreal story ending leaves questions unresolved.
