More than 180,000 fans have backed a campaign urging Electronic Arts to keep Mass Effect alive following BioWare’s closure and the cancellation of its next game. The petition is an expression of grief, affection and hope for a series that helped define modern role-playing games.
EA confirmed on 21 October that it would close BioWare and end early development on the next Mass Effect project. In its official statement, the publisher said it was concentrating investment on a smaller set of priorities. The news brought an abrupt end to a studio with a legacy stretching across Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Knights of the Old Republic.
What the Save Mass Effect petition is asking for
The fan-led #SaveMassEffect campaign has gathered more than 180,000 signatures, according to PC Gamer’s report on 26 October. Importantly, its central request is not necessarily to reopen BioWare. Supporters want EA to commit to continuing the series or consider licensing the intellectual property to another developer capable of carrying it forward.
That distinction matters. A petition cannot compel a rights holder to restart a cancelled project, and there has been no confirmed reversal of EA’s decision. What it can do is make the scale of the audience’s attachment impossible to overlook.
Why this universe still matters
Mass Effect was never only about the Reapers, the Normandy or its sweeping science-fiction setting. It was about the choices players made, the relationships they formed and the characters they carried with them between games. For many, Garrus, Tali, Liara and the rest of the crew became part of a gaming experience they have never quite found elsewhere.
The response to BioWare’s closure reflects that connection. Fans are not simply campaigning for another product bearing a familiar name. They are asking for a world, and a style of storytelling, to have a future.
What happens next?
For now, the answer remains uncertain. EA has announced the closure and cancellation; no new Mass Effect development arrangement has been confirmed. Licensing the franchise elsewhere is one possibility raised by petition organisers, not an announced plan.
At Coloured Static Press, our farewell to BioWare explored what the studio meant to a generation of players. This campaign is the next chapter in that story: proof that the affection for its work survives even when the studio itself does not.
