HeroBot! Lets You Steal Enemy Powers, Then Combine Them Into Something New

FellsSwordGames is building a colourful, fast-moving pixel-art platformer where borrowing one ability is just the beginning.

For a certain generation of players, there is something instantly inviting about a chunky pixel-art robot dashing between platforms and borrowing the powers of enemies. HeroBot! knows that appeal, but its central trick goes one step further: you can absorb two abilities at once and fuse them into a new one.

Created by independent developer FellsSwordGames, the upcoming 2D action platformer wears its Kirby and Mega Man inspirations openly. The difference is in how HeroBot can grab opponents, take their abilities and experiment with pairs of powers, giving players different tools for traversal and combat instead of relying on a single fixed loadout.

One absorbed power is useful. Two change the possibilities.

According to the Steam description, each pairing produces a distinct stronger ability, and doubling up on the same power can be worthwhile too. That raises an interesting decision every time an enemy appears. Do you keep the attack that is currently working, switch to something better suited to the next obstacle, or experiment with a combination you haven’t tried?

It is an idea that can give a traditional action platformer considerably more room for player expression. The developers also emphasise large boss encounters, where recognising useful combinations should be especially important. The central promise is less about collecting every ability and more about understanding when to use each one.

HeroBot! takes the satisfaction of copying an enemy’s move and turns it into a question: what happens if you mix two together?

From dark caves to mushroom caves

In a recent post shared by FellsSwordGames on X, the developer showcased a move from dark caverns into a mushroom cave, while swapping a Dragon + Gun combination for Dragon + Melee. Even in a brief clip, the emphasis is on how a particular ability pairing changes the way the robot approaches the level.

That small detail makes the developer’s updates worth following. It shows a game being built around the relationship between movement, combat and tool selection, rather than simply giving the hero a succession of flashy attacks.

Try the demo while the game develops

HeroBot! has a free Steam demo available now. The full game remains listed as Coming soon, with no confirmed release date on its store page. The developer also maintains an itch.io page pointing players to the updated Steam demo.

We haven’t tested the demo ourselves for this introduction, so we’re not making claims about how the controls, difficulty curve or boss balancing actually feel. What has earned HeroBot! a place on our First Signal radar is its clear mechanic: two absorbed powers, lots of possible combinations and levels designed to put those choices to work.
