There’s something immediately appealing about a platformer that makes movement itself the main attraction. Ball-Aqua, from three-person indie team Dreaming Saints, is built around exactly that idea.

Inspired by games including Sonic Adventure and Ballance, Ball-Aqua puts players in control of a rolling ball as they navigate bright, tropical environments filled with obstacles, opportunities to build speed and hidden collectibles.

More Than Just Rolling Around

Ball-Aqua features a Spin Dash mechanic, rail grinding and stages designed around maintaining momentum. Players can tackle the experience alone or join friends through online co-op.

The full game is planned to include more than 40 levels, while its currently available demo offers eight stages.

There’s also a creative side to the experience. With a level editor and Steam Workshop support, players can build and share their own courses, potentially giving the game a life beyond its original collection of stages.

Three Developers, One Ambitious Platformer

The team behind Ball-Aqua recently responded directly to Coloured Static Press’s call for indie developers participating in Steam Next Fest. Dreaming Saints described the project as a sunny, physics-based ball-rolling platformer inspired by classic games, highlighting its online co-op and level editor.

It’s an ambitious combination for a three-person team, particularly when multiplayer and user-generated content are involved. For players who enjoy learning every corner of a platforming level, finding shortcuts and shaving seconds off their best times, Ball-Aqua could be one to watch.
