Indie Spotlight | Steam Next Fest 2026

Not every football game needs a stadium full of superstars. Football Story starts closer to home, with a teenager, a neighbourhood and a dream of building a street football team. Developer fructus temporum and publisher Polden Publishing are combining football matches with the everyday rhythms of a cosy life sim.

Meet the neighbours of Lumen Bay

Players explore the seaside town of Lumen Bay, train their skills and help its residents. Rather than immediately handing you a squad of professionals, the game asks you to recruit local youngsters and develop the chemistry that makes a team more than the sum of its players.

More than the final score

The game’s story places friendship and growing up alongside football. Daily routines, exploration and encounters with the town’s residents promise a gentler pace between matches, while the team’s progress builds towards taking on professional opponents.

Retro style, controller-friendly play

With colourful pixel art and full controller support listed on Steam, Football Story appears to be courting players who enjoy both classic sports games and character-driven RPGs. How successfully those sides work together will be one to judge when we can play the finished game.

Release plans

The official Steam listing currently gives a release date of 5 November 2026. A separate demo listing exists, but availability should be checked on Steam; a previous playtest closed in September.

Editor’s note: This is an information-based spotlight, not a hands-on review.
