Are PC Handhelds Becoming the Real Alternative to Consoles?

For years, the question was whether a handheld could offer a convincing version of the home-console experience. In 2026, a more interesting question is emerging: do players even need to treat those categories as separate?

Steam Deck helped establish the idea of a portable PC built primarily around games. Since then, Windows handhelds and officially supported third-party SteamOS devices have expanded the choice. None is a perfect replacement for a console, and the differences go well beyond raw specifications.

SteamOS versus Windows

SteamOS aims for an appliance-like experience: launch the device, browse your library and play. Valve’s official support for Lenovo’s Legion Go S showed that the software was no longer confined to Steam Deck hardware. SteamOS compatibility ratings also help players judge how games are expected to run on supported devices.

Windows handhelds offer access to a broader PC software environment and multiple storefronts, but that flexibility comes with interface complexity. A gamepad-first launcher can reduce friction without removing every desktop-PC quirk.

The questions buyers should actually ask

Battery capacity matters, but battery life depends heavily on the game, settings and power limits. Screen resolution can look impressive on a product page yet demand more performance than a handheld can comfortably sustain. Weight, fan noise, suspend-and-resume behaviour and support for a player’s existing library can make more difference to daily use than a small benchmark advantage.

There is also the issue of cost. A premium handheld can overlap with the price of a home console while offering different compromises. Portability is valuable, but it is not free.

Where this leaves traditional consoles

Dedicated consoles still win on straightforward setup, predictable compatibility and the simplicity of sitting down to play. Handheld PCs win when flexibility, an existing PC library and playing away from a desk matter most. For some players the devices complement each other; for others a handheld may become the main machine.

This is an editorial comparison, not a laboratory review. We have not benchmarked the current devices against each other for this feature.
