THE SWITCHBOARD / SOMETHING UNSETTLING / EDITORIAL DISCOVERY
A small fire. A cave you don’t remember entering. The beginnings of a settlement, and a darkness that promises more than it first reveals. A Dark Cave is the sort of indie project that makes a good case for slowing down and paying attention.

Created by solo developer Julian Bauer, this atmospheric, text-based incremental game blends settlement management, exploration and resource decisions with a gradually unfolding mystery. Its influence from minimalist games such as A Dark Room is clear, but the promise here is a darker story that grows alongside your village.
Why it belongs on our radar
Bauer introduced the game to us during a discussion about discovering games by mood, describing it as one for a quiet, eerie evening. That’s a useful way to approach A Dark Cave: not as an action spectacle, but as a slow-burn mix of decisions, production and discovery.
- Build a settlement: develop buildings, organise villagers and grow a community from a precarious start.
- Manage resources: balance gathering, crafting and increasingly involved production chains.
- Explore what lies below: descend into the cave, uncover lore and encounter dangers.
- Choose how to progress: the developer describes the systems as semi-idle and active, rather than a conventional clicker.

The Switchboard verdict?
This isn’t a review or a hands-on recommendation. We haven’t evaluated the finished game. It’s a discovery pick based on information from the developer and the official store pages, and one we’ll be keeping an eye on as the Steam release approaches. If you enjoy quietly ominous worlds, incremental progression and settlement decisions, the free versions make it easy to decide whether the atmosphere works for you.
