A shelf full of gaming merchandise can be brilliant. A shelf full of things you never wanted is another story. That is the gamble behind a geek-themed mystery box, and it is worth knowing what you are signing up for before the surprise lands at your door.

Geek Crate is a UK retailer offering themed boxes of collectibles, figures, accessories and other fandom merchandise. Its selection ranges from broad gaming and geek culture to more specialised interests such as anime, Pokémon and Star Wars. You can choose a one-off box or a subscription, depending on the product and checkout options.

The appeal: discovery, not a guaranteed haul

For a collector who enjoys the reveal, the uncertainty is part of the fun. A mystery box can introduce a new franchise, add an unexpected desk display or make an entertaining gift. But if you only collect one character or series, buying specific items may make more financial sense. A box of surprises is not the same as a curated shopping basket.

Which Geek Crate should you look at?

  • Geek & Gamer: The broadest starting point for someone who enjoys gaming alongside wider pop-culture collectibles.
  • Otaku Crate: Anime and manga merchandise for fans whose shelves already lean in that direction.
  • Smugglers Crate: The Star Wars-themed option, best suited to someone who actively enjoys the franchise.
  • Pokebox: Pokémon-focused surprises.
  • Potter Crate: Harry Potter-inspired merchandise.
  • Thor Crate: Marvel-themed merchandise and collectibles.

Geek Crate advertises the broad Geek & Gamer option from £37.95, with other themed boxes starting at similar prices; Pokémon is currently advertised from £42.95. Those are retailer-listed starting prices as checked in October 2026, not guaranteed checkout prices or estimates of the value of the contents. Options, discounts and shipping terms can change.

Our first-hand verdict: Otaku Premium

We have actually bought an Otaku Premium crate, and the experience was a positive one. Our editor described it as a good box with a good selection of anime-oriented items. The biggest selling point was value: judging by the contents received, he felt that buying the individual items separately would have cost more than purchasing the box.

Just as importantly for a recurring mystery-box product, it was something he would genuinely look forward to receiving each month. That enthusiasm comes from one personally purchased crate, not from testing multiple monthly shipments. We’ll publish the item-by-item details and photographs as a separate review once documented. No score is assigned here, and the retailer has not provided this box for coverage.

One-off purchase or subscription?

A one-off box makes sense for a gift, a seasonal treat or a first experiment with the format. A subscription may suit someone who actively wants regular additions to a collection, but the cost becomes recurring. Geek Crate says its subscriptions can be cancelled, although you should always check the checkout details and billing terms for the option you select.

Three checks before spending

  • Think about duplicates. An enthusiastic collector is often more likely to own related merchandise already. If surprise is not your thing, buy the specific figure or game accessory instead.
  • Compare the full price. Look at the box tier, frequency, any shipping charge outside free-shipping conditions and the retailer’s current terms.
  • Separate promotional photos from guaranteed contents. Product imagery shows the sort of merchandise the retailer offers. It does not establish that any particular figure or item will arrive.

Our view: Geek Crate is worth considering for the collector who enjoys the excitement of unboxing and is flexible about which items arrive. For someone trying to complete a highly specific set, choosing individual products offers more control. Our personally purchased Otaku Premium crate left a positive first impression: an enjoyable anime-focused selection, perceived value above the box price, and genuine appeal as something to receive each month. That is our experience of one box, not a guarantee about future contents or a calculated retail-value comparison. We’ll document individual items in the full review.
