Indie Spotlight | New Game Announcement

Lair of the Leviathan is chasing a feeling that modern role-playing games sometimes leave behind: setting out into a huge fantasy world with little certainty about what waits beyond the next village. Its creators cite the spirit of classic adventures including Ultima and early Baldur’s Gate.

Old-school adventure, modern presentation

The newly announced RPG combines pixel-art presentation with turn-based combat and an open world intended to reward exploration. Rather than treating the world as a corridor between quests, the pitch emphasises the freedom to discover places, meet characters and build a party over a long journey.

Why the retro approach matters

Classic computer RPGs often made discovery itself the reward. That approach asks players to pay attention to their surroundings, experiment with party composition and accept that not every encounter needs to be tackled immediately. Lair of the Leviathan is promising to revisit those traditions for a new audience.

Announcement and platforms

Publisher Deck13 Spotlight announced its partnership with developers Nostalgic Realms and Whiskeybarrel Studios in October 2026. The game is planned for 2027 across PC and consoles, including PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. It can be wishlisted on Steam. A public Steam Next Fest demo has not been confirmed.

Editor’s note: This is an announcement-based discovery feature, not a hands-on preview or confirmation of Steam Next Fest participation.
