CALL OF DUTY / RELEASE WATCH / DMZ
If extraction rather than traditional multiplayer is your favourite way to play Call of Duty, the next date on the calendar is Tuesday 20 October 2026. Activision has confirmed early access to the new DMZ mode for eligible players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The game’s full launch follows on 23 October.
An Xbox Wire reminder published on 16 October points towards the mode’s early opening, with more substantial detail available through Activision’s own DMZ site and an earlier Xbox feature. The key distinction is that DMZ early access is not the same thing as the campaign’s 16 October early-access window.

What is the new DMZ?
DMZ is an extraction mode. Players enter a hostile area, gather supplies, complete objectives, confront opposing forces and attempt to leave with their loot intact. Making it out becomes part of the challenge, not a foregone conclusion. The latest iteration is set in Hajin, a new map tied to events in Modern Warfare 4‘s campaign.
Official descriptions point to an expanded loop around an FOB, or forward operating base. Operators can gather materials and work towards upgrades between deployments, while the same inventory of banked resources can support multiple active characters.
What could make Hajin more interesting?
- Shared resources: items kept in the Bank and Stash can support different Active Duty Operators.
- Crafting and upgrades: collected materials help develop equipment and expand options between raids.
- Risk versus reward: continuing to search for valuable loot means staying in a dangerous environment longer.
- Flexible deployment: Activision says players can enter solo or with a squad.
None of those systems guarantees a better experience than previous DMZ releases. The questions worth testing will be how clearly its missions communicate objectives, how much progress players lose on defeat, and whether the rewards justify repeated trips.
DMZ dates and access
20 October: DMZ early access for eligible digital pre-orders and pre-purchases. 23 October: the full launch of Modern Warfare 4. Players should check their platform’s product terms before buying, since early-access eligibility and installation requirements depend on their edition and platform.
