October’s Game Pass Update Has Plenty to Play, but Don’t Ignore What’s Leaving

The October Game Pass line-up is doing a pretty good job of making an already enormous backlog even more difficult to manage. Battlefield 6 is the obvious headline, but there are several smaller releases here that deserve a look too.

Microsoft detailed the first October wave on Xbox Wire on 7 October. Some titles have already arrived, others are due over the next couple of days, and a notable group is leaving the service on 15 October.

The big additions are already here

Battlefield 6 joined the announced selection on 13 October for cloud, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Microsoft listing Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass access. That’s likely to attract plenty of attention, particularly from anyone who prefers large-scale multiplayer and chaotic destruction.

Also arriving on 13 October is Valor Mortis, a first-person action game from the creators of Ghostrunner. It takes its inspiration from the Napoleonic era and adds supernatural abilities, monstrous enemies and a soulslike approach to combat.

On the same date, Deep Dish Dungeon joined with a different sort of challenge: exploring an interconnected dungeon through survival systems, crafting and co-operative discovery. Those three games alone show just how broad the service’s line-up has become.

A few smaller games could be worth your time

Echo Weaver and Forever Ago were scheduled for 8 October as day-one additions. Echo Weaver is a time-loop adventure where knowledge is central to progression, while Forever Ago follows a more reflective road-trip story built around memories and the people met along the way.

Neon Abyss 2 also entered the line-up on 8 October. If your idea of unwinding involves fast-paced roguelike action and repeatedly learning from your own mistakes, that may be an easier recommendation to investigate than yet another sprawling open world.

Looking ahead, Bluey’s Happy Snaps and the co-operative gladiator roguelike Chained Beasts are listed for 15 October. Beyond These Stars, a city builder set on the back of a space whale, follows on PC on 16 October.

The departures matter just as much

Nine titles are listed to leave Game Pass on 15 October. Among them are A Plague Tale: Requiem, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Pacific Drive. If you’ve been meaning to finish one of those, now would be a sensible time to check your progress.

As ever, the precise version of Game Pass you subscribe to matters. Some additions are available only through particular tiers, and platform availability differs from game to game. It’s worth checking the individual store listing before starting a large download.

More choice is good. Finding the time is another matter.

The interesting thing about this month’s selection isn’t just the major release at the top of the list. It’s the variety below it. A supernatural action game, a quiet narrative adventure and an experimental dungeon crawler aren’t competing for quite the same audience.

That’s where services like Game Pass can be useful. They give you a reason to try something you might otherwise scroll past. Whether any of these games deserves a place in your regular rotation is a question for our reviews, not the announcement.
